Get it Quick, It's another Nail Craze!

After using the Barry M cracked nails effect last winter, I was excited to hear that The Saturdays are releasing their new range of Magnetized nails in Superdrug later this month! I was in Boots last week and saw that the brand '17' have pipped them to the post and have released some great wintery colours in the magnetic effect.

I wasn't sure if the hype was going to live up to what the nails actually turn out like but I have to admit I love it!! You paint the colour on your nail and whilst the polish is still wet, hold the magnet (which is in the lid of the nail varnish) over the nail to create a rippled /tie dye effect. The nice lady in Boots also pointed out there is a rest on the lid which you use to keep the magnet at a usuable distance.

I'm looking forward to using the other colours in the range as I think it would look fab when used with a silver nail varnish!

**Update - I've now used this on my toes too and by using a larger, household magnet (I pinched one from our notice board) you can create an even better rippled result!

I can't believe it's already that time of year for the Julia's House sponsored run along Bournemouth prom. Last year we supplied the bright tees for the event and this year we've included 5k t shirts as well as 10k ones for all the runners participating.

Hannah and I have been working on this project together and limbering up for the charity event at the same time! It's safe to say that not much has changed since last year (none of us have become pro athletes!) but we're delighted to be supporting such a great cause as Julia's House for another year running (get the pun!?).

Forget the kids, are YOU ready to go back to school?

With schools returning next week, research is out that suggest mums will spend an average of £60 on an outfit to drop the kids off in the playground on their first day back. 1 in 5 will get a new haircut and 1 in 2 will make every effort to look their absolute best. While a suntan, fresh haircut and brand new outfit will make you feel fabulous on the first day what happens next week? Or the week after? Back to School...Well Actually Back to Work

The days of me lounging around in my comfy scruffy cloths are over. It’s time to pull myself together because I am going back to work. Maternity time is up and it is with great joy I find myself picking out a new back to work wardrobe. Colourful denim is just the trend I need to energise myself. A Little Swarovski Sparkle

Yeah yeah yeah we know that bling is SO last year (or even the year before) but there's no denying that in spite of what the trend forecasters keep telling us , we love to love a little bit of sparkle!

It reminds me of the ongoing fashion articles slating UGGs and predicting their demise after only a season or two (or probably more accurately, once Katie Price was seen sporting them) but the truth is, if you love something then honestly who cares what those in the ivory fashion towers say about it? It seems as if we're not alone in our indulgence either as Swarovski are going from strength to strength (and yes they do still sell those crystal cut swans and teddy bears) but this year Harrods have announced that they'll be partnering with Swarovski for their 'Crystal Christmas' event in addition to Swarovski still remaining a fashion week favourite for designers.

So, we've just added a little customisation to these gorgeous Monster Beat headphones and I can see the reasoning- hours spent on the treadmill might seem more appealing if you can style it out whilst wearing these babies, which not only sound incredible but now look pretty good too.

It has to be said that whilst we're not the most accomplished of athletes at 4couture.com we're definitely the 'have a go' mentality!

So...this coming Sunday we're delighted to be taking part in the Julia's House 10K in Bournemouth. If the weather holds out then it will be a lovely jog from Bournemouth pier to Southbourne and back again. (I wonder if stopping for coffee en route is allowed?)

University Fashion......

Well...Unfortunately this is to be my last 4couture.com blog! After nearly a year working here I am off to Southampton University to undertake further study! It’s an exciting time with loads to look forward to but also loads to think about so I thought that I would make my last blog for people who might be in the same situation as me. There is so much to think about taking when you move away but on my course especially, I am also thinking about clothes to take and anything new that I want to buy before I go. Knowing that most students work on rather limited budgets ( :( ! ), it may be a sensible idea to buy a few statement pieces that will last me my time at university before I go. So here are my top picks of what’s around at the moment!

With the weather the way it is at the moment, we’ll soon be thinking about a new winter coat and this year it will more important than ever for me with all the walking I’ll be doing. Topshop have got an amazing range of jackets and coats to start the season off and I particularly love the colour of this parka (see right). It is something that will last you such a long time and can be dressed to look stylish as well as being practical. I also think this military cape is gorgeous and would look amazing with a pair of winter boots. Pick either up on the Topshop website at www.topshop.com.

Speaking of winter boots, ASOS have some great pairs if you’re on a budget but still want something high fashion. Lace up boots are still definitely on fashion into the winter season and I absolutely love these cute wedged ones which are a bargain for £55.00! Topshop’s studio brands have also got some great items on the web this season. I particularly like some of the pieces from brand “Love”, especially their range of pinafore dresses. These dresses can be worn on their own in summer and can take you all the way through to winter and be worn with thick tights and boots. This military style one is a great colour for lasting you right through the seasons. There’s also some great tee brands including brand ‘Grey Scale’ who have some amazing t-shirts all in black and white. I really love this tee with the wing image which will give effortless style perfect for any student!

There are still a lot of bargains around the shops and on the web as a lot of sales are running later than usual. Introducing 'Project D'......

It’s been long awaited but it’s finally here, new mum Dannii Minogue has teamed up with London-based designer and close friend Tabitha Somerset-Webb to create their first autumn winter collection which features a host of glamorous evening gowns that we just love. The range is just the first phase of their new brand “Project D” and will be followed by an accessories range and the launch of a fragrance later on in the year. Dannii has said about the collection: “Fashion has been a passion of mine since I can remember and I hope that every woman who slips on a Project D dress will feel glamorous yet effortless.” We think it will do just that and here are our fave picks….

Definitely one of our favourite dresses from the collection is this stunning black gown with a sequined strip down the middle. It is absolutely gorgeous and could be dressed up for the evening or down for holiday day wear. We are all going to be fighting over it here in the studio!

We also love this fab printed dress which is really elegant and stylish. Again, it could be dressed down for work or dressed up to make you look gorgeous on a night out!

The collection is available in the main department stores around London: Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols and also some selected boutiques such as Jessimara in Golders Green and some Trilogy stores. We are really impressed with what Dannii has produced. It’s quite common for celebrities to create collections that don’t reflect their personality or what they would even wear themselves but the dresses in the Project D collection are the sort of thing that you can imagine Dannii wearing on the X factor.

Dannii seems to be in a really good place right now with her new baby boy and new business ventures and she is also said to be returning to the X factor in time for the judges houses stage of the competition. We wish her success with it all and hope that the collection does well!

Fashion Hotspots.....

Here at 4couture.com we all love a bit of a shop, so we're always on the lookout for new shopping territories to explore, and haven’t we been spoiled lately! London will always be one of the best places for retail therapy and it's just getting better and better with new flagship stores and boutiques cropping up all over the place. If you have a spare couple of hours and nothing to fill them with, check out some of our city hotspots!

One of the big stories this week is the opening of Acne’s very first, four floor studio on London’s Dover Street last Friday. We're huge fans of Acne designs so are thrilled to see that we can go in and have a browse. The store seems minimalistic in decoration and layout, no doubt letting the fashion do the talking; they even have a whole floor dedicated to denim! Another big story recently has been the opening of Louis Vuitton’s most luxurious store yet on Bond Street, Mayfair. The store opened a couple of months ago now and was brought in with a bang with a star studded opening party. Marc Jacobs, creative director of Louis Vuitton has said about the store: "It's probably one of the most magnificent retail stores in the world for the best luxury house, the greatest luxury brand." At 1,500 square metres and comprising of three floors, it is a must visit when you feel like indulging in a bit of luxury.

Lastly, not a particularly new store but definitely worthy of a place in our top hotspots list is My Sugarland on St John’s Street. This wonderful place functions as part vintage, part high fashion store featuring pieces from past decades, new up and coming designers and established fashion greats such as Betty Jackson. It also houses a gallery with work from talented artists being displayed in the windows and if that wasn’t enough, you can even hire My Sugarland as a retail or exhibition space. Our hometown and its best kept secrets....

As some of you may or may not know we are based along the south coast and although a lot of our work is in London, we are very lucky to be based in an area full of hidden fashion gems and gorgeous boutiques. The towns nearest to us including Bournemouth, Winchester and Salisbury are great for everything from high street to vintage shopping.

There are some great little fashion boutiques near us including one of our favourites Little London in Winchester, who also have stores in Chichester, Guildford and Tunbridge wells. They also have an online site so check them out at http://www.little-london.com/, where they have introduced some amazing Lucas Jack jewellery, like this stunning gold sandstone cuff which also comes in Royal Blue and Blue Chalc.

We also love Vintage Clobber, a vintage store in Bournemouth which some of the girls regularly visit to pick up some stunning one off pieces that have all of us talking the next day. We also use it to source great items for use in photoshoots. It’s a real place to have a rummage and you’re bound to find something great. As well as boutiques, we have some great high streets and shopping centres around. In Bournemouth there are some great shops including 3 department stores; Beales, House of Fraser and Debenhams. Beales Bournemouth was the first ever Beales to open and therefore has a wealth of history to it as well as a number of brands on sale. They have recently had a re-fit and now have a large MAC store with many talented make-up artists who also work at London Fashion Week. There is also Wesy Quay in Southampton which has around a hundred shops and Castlepoint near Bournemouth which boasts larger stores of many retailers.

But it’s not just the shopping that makes our area an exciting one to live in. There is so much going on in Bournemouth including a huge surf scene with the new surf reef being opened at Boscombe beach earlier this year as well as a huge amount of nightlife and a big burlesque scene, for example shows by our favourite local burlesque dancer Miss Cherry-Pop. The wealth of shops around Bournemouth cater to these interest with many shops selling surf gear such as Sorted surf shop on Boscombe front who also do surfing lessons.

Lastly, The Arts University College Bournemouth are improving every year and becoming a well known institute for Fashion design. This year their students won three awards and the work looked absolutely fab!

So if you thought that the south coast was a place for people to retire, think again.

Style Inspiration...

Now more than ever, generations of women are dressing not only for themselves but for other women their girlfriends, we want our female friends to comment on and approve of the things that we wear. For this reason, there is now a huge amount of websites and blogs written by women who post daily or weekly photos of what they are wearing to perhaps gain approval but more than likely to give inspiration to other women who may not find it quite so easy to experiment within the world of fashion. We think that this is such a great phenomenon; it’s almost like unlimited people-watching from the comfort of your own home, what could be better? There are so many of these sites around so we thought we’d give you the low down on our favourite ones that us girls here in the office visit daily.

Karla Derass has a fashion sense which is simply sublime. Her blog, “Karla’s Closet”, is full of pictures of the amazing places that she visits and the just as amazing outfits that she wears. She is so sophisticated in the way that she dresses and the simple ways in which she accessorizes, and she has one of the most amazing collections of shoes that I have ever seen.

Karla is a great person to take inspiration from as it has become a trend now to over-accessorize yet she shows that you just need a pair of sunnies or a gorgeous clutch to make an outfit. Check out her blog at http://karlascloset.blogspot.com/.

Another of our fave websites is http://www.whatkatiewore.com/ which fairly obviously features daily photos of what Katie wears. She has a very different fashion sense to Karla but just as gorgeous and individual and perhaps more achievable to the average woman in terms of purse limitations. Her wardrobe features so many vintage pieces and she has such a fun and colourful style. The two images below are my favourite outfits that she has worn recently. She looks really classic and sophisticated in the vintage dress at the top and we absolutely love that gorgeous straw bag! However my favourite outfit that she has worn is this stunning silk Pringle dress (bottom image) teamed with bright red shoes and oversized accessories. The whole outfit is so cute and individual and we just love it!

Festival Dressing so far in 2010......

Okay so I know everyone is writing about the fashion at this year’s festivals, but here at 4couture.com we decided that we had to give some credit to some of the celebs who perhaps haven’t been praised as much as the usual suspects for their fashion efforts. Let me emphasize the word ‘effort’ as we have to make the point that none of these celebrities put their outfits together that morning as many like to make out. Anyway, here are our top 3 unsung festival fashion heroines so far this year...

Corine Bailey Rae looked so lovely backstage at Glastonbury, her playsuit was casual and simple but perfect for the occasion and combined with a cute pair of pumps and black-out sunglasses, she looks bang on trend but really laid back.

Jo Whiley went for a simpler look as well, sporting a feminine floral maxi. We love her studded bag but think maybe she could’ve given the outfit an edge with a matching studded but such as this one by HTC at http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/60878.

We also loved T4’s Jameela Jamil’s look this year at Glasto. It’s not easy to pull of short lace leggings and most people don’t do it well but Jameela shows that they can really make an outfit. We’ve praised 3 celebs who we think looked great at festivals so far this year, but it has to be said that as usual, not everyone got it right. Whoever styled The Saturdays onstage this year at the Isle of Wight festival didn’t do it well. Their outfits looked like a massive clash of colour which just didn’t work. The playsuit/boots combo could have worked but the patterns on the playsuits, designed by brand Traffic People, were too busy with so many of them together. We thought that the girls would have gone for an edgy, classic festival look which they often do quite well, but this year they just stood out for all the wrong reasons and in our opinion were miles behind the likes of Kate Moss and Florence Welch in the style stakes.

The Stars of Wimbledon.....

It seems as if someone has ordered the gorgeous weather just in time for Wimbledon this year, and as it is particularly hot, making the right outfit choices for the players essential. There’s always competition between designers about who’s going to get involved with Britain’s biggest tennis competition, but this year it’s the turn of Stella McCartney who has teamed up with names such as Nike and Adidas to create on court outfits for the tennis stars.

You can definitely say that Maria Sharapova has style both on and off the court. She’s a real icon in both the tennis and fashion worlds so you would expect nothing less of her at Wimbledon this year. McCartney teamed up with Nike this year to create Sharapova’s dress which features a layered skirt and cross over detail accross the back. The dress is really stunning and looks beautiful when she moves around the court.

Serena Williams is of course another player who loves to experiment with her outfits. This year, like Sharapova she’s sporting a Stella McCartney/Nike Dress, apparently inspired by the Wimbledon “strawberries and cream” tradition. The dress has a really flattering shape to it and the simple detailing makes it sophisticated. Serena also showed everyone that you can do sport with a perfect set of diamante encrusted nails. Of course Serena is always very glamorous, and until their recent split was always pictured with ex-boyfriend Common on the beach looking great!

But Nike is not the only brand that McCartney has teamed up with this year, she has also continued to work with Adidas, creating outfits for the likes of Britain’s Andy Murray and Laura Robson, and also Ana Ivanovic. This year Ivanovic has introduced leggings to her ensemble, which is perhaps a questionable choice considering the temperatures at Wimbledon this year. She still looks stylish although the outfit clearly didn’t help her as Ivanovic suffered a devastating first round defeat knocking her out of the competition.

Andy Murray is looking good this year and hopefully will go far in the competition. He always looks smart on the court but his style off the court perhaps could be improved. As such a massive inspiration to many young people all over the country, maybe he should follow in the footsteps of Roger Federer and step away from the everyday t-shirt and jeans combos....he is only 23 after all!

We can’t wait to see the stars’ new wardrobes and the way they are going to affect the world of fashion. If you haven’t already spotted it, this month our favourite magazine ELLE have a fab supplement giving you all the latest tips from the experts on this season’s hottest trends. It’s a great read and features ‘how to’s’ on wearing everything this season from jeans to leather skirts. There’s also an article on ‘How to shop the High Street’ with 50 top tips. Burlesque is making a comeback!

So you must have noticed that one of the hottest trends going around at the moment is underwear as outerwear, which goes hand in hand with the current day explosion of Burlesque. Women everywhere are baring all and doing burlesque as a fun way of working out and building confidence. One of our most adored local burlesque dancers is Miss Cherry-pop (right) who you can check out on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Miss-Cherry-Pop/137150578933?ref=ts. Inspired by all of this, we are showing you how burlesque-inspired make-up and fashion is right on trend.

Almost every fashion house is showing this trend this season - one of the front runners on the high street has got to be Topshop. They have a stunning selection of corsets and bodices such as this lace piece which would go perfectly with a pair of harem pants or shorts. It also comes in cream and grey and is an absolute bargain for £25. We also love this denim bra-style top, perfect for summer and a more casual take on this trend.

We’re also big fans of the great brand ‘Bebaroque’ who have gorgeous pieces including bodies and tights. They are at a higher price than you would pay on the high street but the quality is worth it. Burlesque style make-up, made famous by celebrities such as Dita Von Tesse, is totally glamorous and completely achievable for a night out. The three most important things in burlesque style make-up is flawless matte skin, defined eyes and gorgeous red lips. Here are some of our recommendations; Lancome Teint Idole Silky Matte Mineral Foundation was one of Cosmopolitans 2009 Beauty Awards winners, and gives a matte and fresh-faced look for 18 hours. Urban Decay Surreal Skin Cream to Powder Foundation was also a winner. In terms of eyes, we’ve discovered this great new product, Urban Decay’s Cream Eyeliner. It’s better than a pencil and a liquid and is sure to give you that perfect defined look. Now for the most important part, to pull this look of you need to have the perfect red lipstick. Our vote goes to a brand new product from our favorite make-up artists MAC. They’ve created two lipsticks named Viva Glam Gaga and Viva Glam Cyndi, named after Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper. We’re super busy at 4couture.com this week, all rushing around with client appointments and fittings but we’ve spotted an absolutely amazing event that we just had to let you know about. Kerry Taylor Auctions are an auction house who hold auctions featuring antique, vintage and designer clothing. Their next auction is on March 16th and we’ve heard that they have some red carpet celebrity dresses so we had to have a quick look! Here are our Top 5 items from the auction...

Definitely one of the highlights of the auction is this Alexander McQueen black and gold brocade jacket which is completely stunning. In light of his tragic death we’re sure it is going to be one of the most popular items of the day- It’s estimated at £200-£300 pounds but we can see it going way over that.

We a lso love this gorgeous pastel yellow dress which is very on trend, worn by Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto at London Fashion week. The dress is current season Burberry and is elegant, girly and really easy to wear and we think it would be a great piece to bid for.

Number 3 is a tour outfit which belonged to Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud, consisting of a fringed corset and miniskirt. The outfit combines two major trends for this season, pastels and 1920’s style fringing. It would be perfect for a chic evening do, and valued at £300-£500 it would be a real statement buy.

But the auction doesn’t only feature outfits worn by the most stylish celebrities. Kerry Taylor Auctions are also auctioning a huge selection of vintage pieces from as far back as the 1800’s. Some pieces are being auctioned as groups which means that if you’ve got a real passion for dressmaking and altering, you can keep the pieces you love as they are and alter the rest. One of the best examples of this is this group of lace and patterned blouses from around the 30’s-40’s, there are approximately 20 in the auction and some are beautiful and fit in perfectly with this seasons trends, and at an approximated £200-£300 for all of them, that’s just over £10 a blouse.

Lastly, similar to our last pick, one of the best value auctions are these WW2 military style jackets. The group consists of 5 jackets and they’re estimated at £50-£70 for the lot which is less than you’d pay for one on the high street in this style. Our favourite is this double-breasted grey coat with gold buttons and red detail but the rest are just as lovely.

So, if you’re around on the 16th of March then pop along and grab something really special, you might end up getting a bargain but if not you can guarantee you will spend all your money on something worthwhile, we know we’ll be there!

Grammy's Style 2010....

It’s that time of year again when all of the television and music awards ceremonies are happening around the world and with the Grammys being aired for the first time on UK TV tonight, 3rd February, here at 4couture.com we’re giving you the inside scoop on what the celebs were wearing whilst battling it out for the much desired title of ‘Best Dressed’.

Considering my last blog, many of the stars were very on trend boasting long flowing gowns in nudes and pastels. Keri Hilson looked gorgeous in a Dolce & Gabbana fishtail dress, with a small amount of embellishment and minimal jewellery, her look was classic and sophisticated (see far right). She was joined by Katy Perry in a beautiful Zac Posen backless nude gown with gold sequins and flowers, (see right), who was also showing off her new engagement ring, courtesy of Russell Brand.

Carrie Underwood looked stunning in both of her gowns on the red carpet and off. Her first was an asymmetrical white Edition by Georges Chakra dress combined perfectly with an amazing Swarovski clutch, and then for her Michael Jackson tribute performance she changed into a dazzling Reem Acra gown which became available on www.gilt .com but sold out almost instantly. Joining her onstage, Celine Dion wore one of my favourite dresses of the night which got missed by many as she didn’t walk the red carpet. Her Aquilano.Rimondi dress made her look 10 years younger as she showed everyone that she’s still got it!

Glee star Lea Michele definitely deserves a mention in her Romona Keveza dress. Combined with subtle make-up and chic smoky eyes, Lea looked a million miles away from her on screen, temperamental teenager role (see right). As usual Beyonce looked truly amazing in four (yes four!) different dresses and Lady Gaga proved that she really doesn’t know the meaning of “Too far” (see below....enough said.).

Pastel Perfection....

So, with all of this depressing weather we’ve been having lately, is it only me who is looking for something to lift us out of these winter blues? It may seem like it’s too early to start investing in your summer wardrobe but here at 4couture.com we’ve been looking at some stylish options that will take you right through the seasons.

A major trend for Spring/Summer 2010 is going to be soft, floaty fabrics in gorgeous pastel colours. Although this may seem like a scary thought as we’re only in January, worn in the right way you can wear them from the day you buy them right through to the end of the summer. My maternity tale....

I’m almost due to leave for maternity leave, the last month has been a bit of a wardrobe endurance challenge and I’m finding it harder and harder to find flattering clothes. Being petite it is particularly difficult- all of me is small except my middle! Being a strange shape has made me a bit of a leading authority on maternity clothes so I thought I would impart a little of my knowledge before I go! When you first start growing out of your normal clothes it’s so tempting to rush out and buy loads of new clothes but stop and consider- at 5 months you really have no idea how you will look at 8 months! Better to start with basics and add to your wardrobe as you go. My maternity saver, boring as it is, was vests from Topshop. They may look boring but are the essential with the longer length protecting your modesty all the way up to delivery day! Also from Topshop I can’t fault the skinny jeans. They even come in a size 6! http://tiny.cc/qu69i.

Still on the high street it would be wrong not to mention River Islands new maternity range. They start at a 6 and do a great range of great leggings, my favourite maternity clothes! I especially like the wet look leggings- http://tiny.cc/NDufM. The biggest problem with this range is availability- online you can access the whole range but very few stores are carrying it.

ASOS keep winning awards for their maternity clothes but they start at an 8 so I haven’t been able to personally test them. They have some beautiful dresses at reasonable prices, my favourite being this embellished jersey dress (http://tiny.cc/NiAFZ). Black is definitely the best colour for mums to be- so forgiving!

There are hundreds of online boutiques selling maternity wear- one of my favs is Isabella Oliver for luxury knitwear. A warm knitted dress is a must with the weather as miserable as it is so I really love this cashmere mix dress- http://tiny.cc/kNtXq. Also try Babes with Babies- they have the best loungewear and tips for pre and post natal dressing, they also have some really lovely gift ideas- go to http://www.babeswithbabies.com/.

With Christmas getting scarily close it’s time get our outfits sorted for all those Christmas parties, family do’s and works drinks, here’s a bit of help for all budgets...

Christmas parties are the obvious excuse to put on the most glitzy outfit and highest heels you own. With all the sequins around at the moment you will be spoilt for choice but run the risk of wearing the same as everyone else! So go glam instead of glitz for maximum impact and rough it up a bit with studs as embellishment.

What to do when sequins just don't hit the spot...

By January I’m sure we will all have had enough of sequins and all that glitters, luckily for those in favour of more understated glamour, Spring 2010 has lots to offer. Those in the know suggest that as we are predicted to be out of recession fashion will step up the luxury. It’s not all new news either with statement leggings still a must have especially when incorporating next seasons big peekaboo trend (seen at Bora Aksu-below, House of Holland, Balenciaga, -below, Gareth Pugh...). Be inspired by the glam rockers of the 80’s!

Fashion becomes more feminine with soft pastels and all white (seen at Pringle-below) while the fierce shoulders of now have been toned down and replaced by a softer puff sleeve (Seen at Robert Carrey-Williams, Mullberry).

Lingerie as outerwear has already begun to creep in and is set to be bigger next season (seen at Betty Jackson and Chanel-below). I can’t be the only one wondering how to interpret this trend and time will only tell what the high street will do with it.

As an antidote to all that femininity and in anticipation of 2012’s Olympics deluxe sportswear was seen at Twenty8Twelve and Topshop Unique with American Retro the dominating theme.

X Factor Style

The nights are drawing in and the weathers turning cold- a perfect excuse to stay in and snuggle up with the best of Saturday night tv and a takeaway! The X Factor is keeping us entertained and our thoughts are turning to the X Factor styling. The styled version of the final 12 may have hit the media but I can’t say I am too convinced by the contestants new looks. Rikki Loney has gone from accessorising with a comical looking flat cap to an equally ridiculous looking bowtie whilst twins John and Edward simply look no different. The girls have fared slightly better with Rachel Adedeji looking stunning.

On Saturday nights live show the contestants wore a variety of looks but most fell short of the mark. Gorgeous Joe was left looking awful in a tan jacket and although the makeup can’t be faulted Stacey looked better before she received the attention of the professional x factor stylists.

On a more successful styling note Alexander Burke has gone from gorgeous but girl next door to phenomenal and fierce. It’s a shame the same can’t be said for Leona Lewis who never quite reached her potential but is now partnered with Vivienne Westwood for an edgier look.

Crazy for Collaborations.....

Recently the number of designer/ high street/ celebrity collaborations has snowballed- it seems like everyday another is created but that's not to say we don't love them.

H&M have given us some great designer collaborations (Mathew Williamson, Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf....) but is anyone not excited about Jimmy Choo for H&M this November?! The preview looks good (below) although who knows how this will affect the Jimmy Choo brand?

Topshop have been at the forefront of designer collaborations for a while now with lots of different lines available in thier flagship Oxford Street store and online. Another British Summertime....

With the British weather changing on a seemingly hour by hour basis it is really difficult to know what to wear each day. Layering is definitely the way forward to keep you warm/cool/dry depending on the hour!

A key trend for this coming winter is draping. Get yourself a draped cardigan and layer over a plain vest if the weather might get warm or a tee if it’s going to be colder. As autumn approaches wear thicker base layers with long sleeves. Job Hunting in the Fashion Industry

It’s graduation time and whilst the mortar boards are flying in the air the celebration for many is tainted with concern over news that half of all companies are not looking to recruit a graduate in the coming months. With experts predicting that 2009’s graduates are going to have a harder time finding work than ever before the advice for all graduates is to try to get work experience, further qualifications or even travel and work abroad to avoid the worst of the recession but is this advice applicable to fashion graduates?

Every year we look to take on a graduate and there is always huge uptake for the position. There are a number of things that we, as the employer, are looking for and also a number of ways that a graduate can stand out.

Obviously a good degree from a good university helps but that doesn’t necessarily mean a first class degree. At uni I was told that a 2.1 degree is the most attractive to employers look for as it implies the graduate has done more than just have their head in a book for 3 years. Qualifications are not the be all and end all of a career in fashion. Further academic qualifications above a degree are unlikely to be as useful as the same period spent gaining experience.

Work experience has always been seen as a vital skill set by fashion graduate employers and the best way to get experience is whilst still at university however there is a difference between obligatory work experience that is done as part of the degree and work experience that the graduate has embraced. As employers we’re looking for interesting placements- the hard to get and unusual, as it implies the graduate worked hard to get a placement and knew what they were doing!

Enthusiasm is something that we are always on the lookout for. Graduates lacking obvious enthusiasm for the job need not apply...! It is something that can’t be faked and is so vital to the job. We know that working in fashion can sometimes be less than glamorous but the enthusiasm for the job keeps us (and our graduates) going when things get tough. Prove to us that you can work hard in a stressful situation with a smile.

Start at the bottom and work your way up- offer yourself as an unpaid assistant/runner and prove a bit of hard work and menial jobs don’t phase you. As employers we are scanning incoming CV’s for something that shows this- a particularly gruelling work experience placement, a previous job in something on the menial side- anything that shows a willingness to work really hard and a grounded attitude.

Graduates need to have an excellent knowledge about current trends and an eye for style. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a proportion of this will be judged on what you are wearing at the interview. Interviewees that are wearing something that both attracts our attention but remains smart and appropriate are likely to be remembered for all the right reasons.

Ok. So you know what to do WHEN you find a vacancy but HOW to find one of those rare and precious things? Be everywhere. Read everything. If you are not looking everywhere from fashion industry tweets to small time industry magazines you may miss out. Treat looking for a job as a full time job. Network, network, network. If no one knows who you are then how will they offer you a job or your dream placement? Think about people you know that are working in the industry- uni colleagues, tutors, your PR neighbour who works in PR, your mums friends son who is in a signed band..... Think laterally not literally when sending out your CV- PR and media agencies, small time fashion magazines and local newspapers. All might be the tiny step in the door you need.

Above all remember you are looking for your dream career so stick with it and stay focused!

Boy Band Style

Boy bands are back in style! In our studio there are a range of ages reflecting the die hard Take That fans to those getting excited about the reforming of Blue and all of us loving working with new bands. There’s a lot out there about the new ladies of pop and their style but not really much at all about the guys storming onto the music scene. It’s not just girls who need to dress to impress- look like you’re an international superstar and maybe you just will be. The importance of good style for a boy band is clearly getting through to the music industry reps with us often being asked to style up and coming bands- which is a favourite job of mine. Here’s a rundown of what to look out for over the coming summer.

Vagabond (above) are a 5 piece all guy soul/funk band and predicted for the big time. When they first came onto the scene at the beginning of the year they were demonstrating some flaky style with a grittier look than perhaps their music suggested wearing checked shirts, leather jackets and skinny jeans all thrown together. As the band’s reputation grows so does their style with latest press shots showing a much more grown up, tailored look more suited to their soulful sounds. Juilian Perretta (below) is the latest hot new singer songwriter, with a smooth 70’s sound (not totally different to Vagabond- maybe soul is the sound of summer 2009?) he is already dressed to impress. Fresh from supporting Girls Aloud on their Out Of Control tour he has fans that include Perez Hilton and Mark Ronson. His tailored blazer and vintage shirts teamed with modern skinny jeans and statement belts are a visual nod to his sound. With his afro style hair he should steer clear of flared trousers and brown leather to avoid looking like a complete 70’s throwback. Currently being played on radio 1 check out his MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/julianperrettamusic) to get updates on gigs and the album release rumoured to be late this summer. London electro-indie group Milke (below left) have been receiving rave reviews everywhere they go. You help but compare Ra Khan to Brandon Flowers with his tailored yet flamboyant style. Andrew Friendly follows the theme with bassist Dave and drummer Luke bringing a more rock and roll edge to the proceedings. Producing really good and well balanced indie/electro music that I defy you not to dance to! Serious 1920’s tailoring is becoming more of a stage look for them at the moment but the full blown stage look of previous pieces worn by Andrew and Ra will be back and will be bigger. Compared to a ‘serious Scissor Sisters’ this band isn’t doing high street but you can get a piece of the action with this Alexander McQueen Two Colour Jacket (below right) (http://www.oki-ni.com/invt/am0054bei). Catch them playing venues all over the UK, France and Spain this summer and rumour has it a debut album will be crashing onto the scene sometime later this year. Skinny Minnies...

I am a size 6. I am a normal healthy person who happens to be small boned. I'm not willing to get into a size debate here I merely wanted to point out that there are natural size 6 and 8's and it's really difficult to find clothes that fit, especially bikinis and jeans. Many high street stores only stock a very small number of 8's and even less 6's. Often the greatest number of 6's are in the petite range but many size 6 people are not actually petite in proportion. I'll save dressing size 6 clients for another post.....!

On the high street the worst culprit has to be new look. River Island, Next are Topshop are generally the most reliable but size 6 sells out fast in popular lines (except in petite). Amazingly I have heard reports of a size 4 dress in my local Topshop - further investigation has shown me that you can search size on www.topshop.com and a size 4 search produced 4 skirts including this super summery number below for £18.00. http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalo gId=19551&storeId=12556&productId=1155150&langId=-1&categ oryId=&parent_category_rn=

H&M have a lot of size 6 items in everyday ranges i.e vest tops, tees, hoodies e.t.c but very limited numbers in other ranges. Where H&M and River Island win is in the denim department, both reliably have size 6 jeans in lots of styles and leg lengths. Online check out knowmysize.com http://www.knowmysize.net/Home.aspx/Size6 a shopping website that allows you to search for clothes in your size across the web thus avoiding that 'wow I love that but oh.....not in my size' disappointment. The real internet star of this story is ASOS http://www.asos.com/Woman/where pretty much everything is available in a size 6 or 8 without being petite and you can search using size only. Unfortunately I have a major issue with ASOS- there are no bikinis in smaller than a size 8. No good. Figleaves http://www.figleaves.com/uk/department.asp?dept=swim&cm_re=menu-_-menu_bottom-_-swim and Swimhut http://www.swimhut.com/index.php?cPath=2 also fail to provide anything much in less than an 8. Interestingly I never have a problem when buying vintage. Check out the selection at Yoox (http://www.yoox.com). Another sizing factor seems to be price, anyone ever seen anything less than an 8 in Primark? But increase your budget and suddenly it's the most common size. J Brand Jeans have heaps of small sizes and include a size 6 maternity range- almost unheard of! (http://www.jbrandjeans.com/pl/c/30.html). Pop Style

There are some women in the music business right now that are getting me excited with their style. Katy Perry slipped into the fashion spotlight even before her first single was out at the beginning of last year. It’s her eclectic mix of vintage from 1940’s pin up girl dresses to 80’s style bright and bold prints. She herself has described her style as ‘a history book’ of fashion and favouring quirky accessories she has been quoted as loving fruit. The newest members of the music business Girl’s Can’t Catch (www.girlscantcatch.com) (below) are close to our hearts as member Jess is our studio mate. They are currently supporting Girls Aloud on tour and with a single out in July and these young starlets are turning heads already. Jess’ unique blend of hip hop and glamour is no easy look to pull off but she is doing it effortlessly. Phoebes really individual style is quirky and cute while Daisy is definitely pulling off a sexier look. These could be ones to watch!

I guess it wouldn’t be cool to talk about Pop Style without mentioning Lady GaGa. Her headline grabbing outfits are getting increasingly crazy (tea cup anyone?!) and definitely border on the risqué. All her style is coming from her team or as she calls them her Haus of GaGa. She is known to design her own clothes and now, perhaps unsurprisingly, there is talk of a clothing line. Yes she has as many critics as fans but she gets her style point across and gets noticed-not only are people looking at her they are trying to look like her. Lady GaGa is aparently excited by this having been quoted as saying “the fashion is spreading!!” And it certainly is- just take a look at Nicole Richie channelling GaGa style for a recent BlackBook magazine (www.blackbookmag.com/pop-culture/image-full/1282) article actually works! Dressed in Chanel, Luis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent the edgy punk look suits her and if you don’t think you can pull off head to toe GaGa then check out Lauren Luke on YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/panacea81) in an attempt to emulate the crazy made up eyes of Lady GaGa.

And let us not forget LadyHawke (AKA Pip Brown) who instantly bridged the gap between music and fashion by providing the soundtrack for both the Topshop Unique and Osman Yousefzada LFW shows this year. Currently spotted playing with Tommy Sparx and The Tings Tings around the UK while rocking an adrogenous 60’s rock chick vibe. Her love of flannel shirts and oversized tees layered with skinny jeans and boots. An easy look to copy but worn with a certain smoky twist she manages to make a very overdone look seem unique (http://www.myspace.com/ladyhawkerock).

Finally Little Boots (AKA Victoria Hesketh) is a bit of a newcomer with her debut album out on the 8th June and has been celebrated for rocking vintage Studio 54 style dresses on stage recently. I’m often asked to find accessories for clients and shoots and at this time of the year it’s all about sunglasses. Expensive designer glasses may look fabulous but they often cost quite a bit and given the tendency of small accessories to mysteriously vanish or get damaged on shoots I’ve been looking for brilliant budget friendly alternatives.

The hottest styles this summer are the 80’s style Rayban wayfarers and big, round circular styles haven’t gone anywhere. Best of all- you need not look far on the high street to find them!

The 80’s may be big right now but an alternative trend is slipping into the mix- 50’s style. Stay one step ahead in these retro glasses from new look (www.newlook.com). Teamed with strips and red lipstick a glamorous look is guaranteed. Alternatively go down the vintage route for real retro. The Art of Fashion Sketching

OK, I’ll admit to having not picked up a pencil since textiles lessons at school so when I was asked to demonstrate my fashion sketching I was just a little nervous. It was inevitable that I would have to get to grips with sketching though- often it’s the easiest and most concise way of sharing ideas and inspirations with a client.

The difficulty of translating the beautiful ideas floating around in my head to a simple but inspiring sketch should not be underestimated. Preliminary web research said start with the basics they tell me, create some croquis and go from there. With the help of some fantastic templates from www.designersnexus.com and a few online refresher lessons from www.fashion-templates.com (which has some really stunning sketches) sometime later I am surrounded by hundreds of naked sketches.

Once I’ve got the hang of sketching croquis I needed to develop them by clothing them. Taking inspiration from my own wardrobe I started to draw some summer basics.

I know that practice makes perfect and after drawing 10 A3 sheets with 4 sketches per sheet I must be getting there- a sketch has gone from taking me an hour to about 20 minutes. I feel confident drawing women but men?! I just cannot get the pose and proportion right so as they say...back to the drawing board! Faces and men are going to take a while longer. It’s a work in progress!
